The Year 2008 has been designated as the Euro-Mediterranean Year of Intercultural Dialogue. As the principal institution for dialogue in the Euro-Mediterranean region, the Anna Lindh Foundation, its National Networks and partners have a unique opportunity to unite together under one banner for dialogue and to promote the role cultural dialogue can play in challenging key issues at the start of the twenty-first century.

The Anna Lindh Foundation launched an open micro-grant scheme in December 2007 to support civil society groups in developing actions under the campaign banner ‘1001 Actions for Dialogue’. The deadline of the call was 31st of January 2008.

The Euro-Mediterranean Dialogue Night event will take place on Thursday 22 May 2008, exactly one week before the first Euro-Mediterranean Ministers of Culture meeting in Greece.

While this campaign is being developed by the Foundation and its Networks, anyone in the region, including those working in civil society and the wider public, can be involved in the ‘1001 Actions’ campaign. You can do this through participating in one of the activities taking place in May 2008, participating in the ‘Dialogue Night’, developing an idea for action to be implemented in May 2008, promoting the campaign and its messages to people in your community.

In addition, if you are a civil society organization based in the Euro-Mediterranean region and working for the promotion of dialogue, you can join one of the Networks of the Anna Lindh Foundation.

Today, the Anna Lindh National Networks bring together over 1500 civil society organizations from all sectors of civil society.

There are many different ways members of the National Networks and partners can promote the campaign, including:

  • developing an idea for action
  • labializing an activity under the banner of ‘1001 Actions’
  • institutional patronage for the event and campaign

Dialogue between people, and intercultural coexistence, is one of the main challenges at the start of the twenty-first century. This issue is especially important to the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, the far-reaching political framework between the European Union and its partners in the southern Mediterranean region, which created the Anna Lindh Foundation and which embraces the values of the ‘1001 Actions’ campaign/

Principal objectives of the campaign include:

  • to connect the disparate initiatives and actions for dialogue which are taking place in the Euro-Med region
  • to raise the visibility of the organizations, individuals and actions for dialogue in the region
  • to create a sense of community across the thirty-seven National Networks of the Anna Lindh Foundation
  • to demonstrate the level of visibility and impact that can be achieved through collective action
  • to raise the importance of dialogue work within civil society and the wider public
