First Steps
As you know, 2008 is the EU Year of Intercultural Dialogue, a year in which eyes in the region will be on the Anna Lindh Foundation and its Networks. With this in mind, the Foundation is preparing to launch a major international campaign: ‘1001 Actions for Dialogue’. The campaign, which sets out to create a mass mobilization of people and actions, will focus on the promotion of the dialogue and the aim of ‘knowing the other’.
In order to raise the visibility of the campaign, as well as promote the sense of community across our Networks, the majority of actions will be implemented in the same period, at the start of May 2008. We will encourage activities of all sizes and themes, from international seminars to student-led intercultural parties, the important factor being the mass mobilization of actions in the same period. The culmination will be ‘Dialogue Night’, an event held in synchronization across thirty-seven countries, where individuals and groups across the region can lend their signature to the campaign.
As a first step in our mission, I would like to request you to go to our feedback page where you can share with us your first reflections and ideas.
Indeed, the success of this campaign will depend on your own enthusiasm to unite together for this cause, as well as our global commitment, as a network of networks, to implement ideas and action for dialogue. More than anything, what is important is creating a movement for participation, and the key will be making sure the maximum amount of people are aware of, and can actively participate in, this campaign.
As we begin the ‘1001 Actions’ campaign together, we have a unique opportunity to act as a network of networks, raising the visibility of our own work, as well as promoting the importance of dialogue work to the wider public. I look forward to working with you on this major campaign, and I hope I can count on your support.
I do admire the slogan " know the other"under which the 1001 Actions for Dialogue will be launched. However, I would go further beyond " know the other" to “ accepting the other” arriving at “ living peacefully together “.I feel that the ultimate objectives of the precedent event would be as follows:
- To build capacity of all participants through seminars held by professionals and experiments , thematic discussions and knowledge sharing , and workshops to make young democratic citizens able to support sensible and deliberative policies within their home countries and world wide at large.
- To build a deliberative dialogue among all nations that include youngs participating actively in civics in order to create a highly involved democratic forum among future’s leaders
- To give all participants a competitive advantage of “ know the other”
- To enhance the cooperation among the world forthcoming young future leaders by exchanging ideas with all participants on the local/global issues to arrive at “ accepting the other”
- To alter solutions on the process of formulating new politics issues in the sense of rising deliberate politics and suistainable peace.
- To hold deliberate attitude instead of confrontation attitude to “ living peacefully together “ .
Hope it helps.

The Non Government Organization Support Centre of Cyprus, (NGO-SC) waves at this wonderful initiative and looks forward with enthusiasm for this year’s events. “Knowing the other” is just a first step towards co-existing, co-operating and living in harmony with the other. Therefore, as we see not only in Cyprus, but also in other countries in the world, cultures mix, but don’t bind. The problem that locals always have is the fear of the deferent, and the fear of the unknown. Well, we should give everyone the chance to know the unknown, and make a step forward in order to pass the border line crossing from multiculturalism, to interculturalism.
A firm suggestion from our side is that there will be a network of audiovisual connection between the countries during the ‘Dialogue Night’. I am sure that this is probably an idea that other people have expressed already, but in case nobody has done so, I lay it on the (blog) table to be discussed.
