Traditionally, every year, the International Videofestival invites a partner festival, with which it shares certain features, to present itself among the guests and participants. This year, Magma - mostra di cinema breve is the guest festival representing Italy at Bochum. The presentation of Magma’s selection will take place during a Videobrunch on saturday morning, the 31st of May, Videofestival’s last day.

Bochum International Videofestival

The German Festival focuses mainly on the international video competition. This year they are presenting 33 productions coming from all over the world. Many videos derive from Germany, but also videos from Russia, Australia, Austria or Mexico are going to be screened. The videos are shown in 6 blocks, which are exhibited in the big hall of the Musisches Zentrum during the three festival days. After each block there will be a possibility for discussions. Two juries award several winners.

Bochum International Videofestival was born 18 years ago from the idea of a group of german students interested in every form of visual expression. The festivaI, still and strongly linked with the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, receives every year more than 500 short films, from experimentals to fiction, documentaries and videoclips. Hundreds of directors and artists from every corner of the world have come to Bochum to take part in the festival.

Since 2002, some specials and vj exibitions animate the festival nights and support the usual programme based on the official competition of short films judged by an international jury.

Magma - mostra di cinema breve

In the six years since its inception, Magma collected works from all over the world, from participants from a total of 73 different countries. More than 1600 works were shown, about 290 short films were resented. All in all, the festival received more than 7000 registered entries, hosting directors from such diverse countries as France, Palestine, Belgium, Denmark, Japan, Australia, Thailand, the UK, Spain, Puerto Rico, Italy, Turkey, Holland, Germany, Lithuania, Portugal, Norway, India, Finland, the United States, Romania and Hungary.

In contrast to the bigger italian festivals, Magmas focus always lay on the short video, and saw it as a separate art form, allowing for the experimentation with new styles and the creation of new trends. This is also evidenced by the spectrum of authors: Everyone from first-time amateur to established director is represented. For reasons unknown, the italian art community still harbours the prejudice of the short film being less important as longer formats. In this difficult position, Magma presents an alternative, creating attention for the medium and aiding in its distribution. Building bridges from authors to audience, the festival creates a special sensibility for the short forms of cinema, leading to increased appreciation and even passion for this artform by the spectators.
