“Who could ever steal if feels at home?”

Ribka Sibhatu's book

On April the 2nd “Naufragi – the Urban Fragilities Festival” dedicated a whole day to Women Immigration.
It catched my attention the speech of Ribka Sibhatu, Eritrean poet and writer. She talked about her experience and impression as an immigrant woman, first in Paris and then in Rome. She said that when she arrived to France she was surprised to find 3 locks in the door house while at home she didn’t even had the key….
The most amazing thing, she said, is that in Eritrea nobody sleep in the street… even if they are so poor and have nothing, they however help each other and the family with no children build houses for poorer young people… when she went to Paris, a city she knew being so rich, she saw so many homeless people and found no explanation why….
In Eritrea, especially in the countryside, the guests and the aged persons are considered “sacred”. Her mum used to kept part of the dinner in case somebody arrived, even if the 10 daughters and sons were still hungry. Guests were always welcome and there was no fear or thefts or criminals…
She used to tell them “Who could ever steal if feels at home?” and “Life is only a passage… the house belong to God”.
All my respect to this huge wisdom.
