Subtle discriminations just around the corner...
A curious coincidence wanted that we met the Director of the newspaper “Il Tamburo”, Raymond Dassi, in the day celebrated as symbol of the Liberation of Italy and this year also the V2-Day, when 3 referendum (referenda?) have been proposed to Italian people to uphold the constitutional right “free press in a free country”.
We did not touch the issue, it was not our purpose, but this did not prevent from converting a quiet interview to a lively discussion about the way immigration should be dealt in a video or in a newspaper article.
Raymon is a specialist in communication and information technologies, and works for the development of intercultural journalism: “Don’t ask me why my name is so difficult to pronounce or where I come from, because this is nevertheless a contribution to make me feel discriminated due to my origins… ask me what am I fond of, what I do in my spare time .. in this way you will understand that I am like you, that I do the same things that you do….”
We promised Mr. Dassi to show him the video before distribution, to have his opinion about the topics raised in the documentary: it is very important to understand if this approach is clearly innovative as we deemed or if there is a sort of discrimination that we, as Italian, can’t perceive... not really for the documentary itself, in which we believe in, and we are hard working on, but as a general consideration of being aware of subtle discriminations that we usually do not recognize but an immigrant is subject to every day… with no intention of being overly sympathetic or goody-goody, but to offer an objective and actual point of view.
