It is organized in a Public Library where lots of young people come each day. Workshops, films, meetings activities will take place. Main aim is to eliminate prejudices and stereotypes against groups and minorities of people a number of majority. It promotes intercultural dialogue and human rights.
Living library subtitled 'don't judge a book by its cover' is an unusual library. Instead of paper books there are marginalized people who face daily prejudice and are stereotyped due to their skin color,
Ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, profession, state of health or life style. These people are often judged as inferior by society. Living library is a friendly place to talk, share and exchange your
ideas and opinions. It is a place for finding answers to questions one would not easily ask.
Come and 'borrow' a Book. You can learn a lot. 'BOOK' is a person with his/her own life experiences of being put by society into imaginary boxes and drawers because of the look, beliefs or behavior. He or she is willing to disclose their personality, to debate and discuss on controversial issues with a 'Reader', as well as to answer taboo questions.
'READERS' are people interested in learning about the life of minorities in our society within a friendly dialogue in a friendly environment of the Living library.
'LIBRARIANS' are assistants in the Living Library. They help'Readers' with registration and with the actual meeting of a 'Book'.
How does a "Reader" meet a "Book"?
The "Reader" of the Live Library chooses a "Book" from a Catalogue of Books that is provided by the 'Librarians'. After regular registration a "Reader" is given a library card for keeping a record of the
borrowed 'Books'. Before meeting a 'Book' the 'Reader' must confirm with a signature The Ten Loan Rules of the Living Library (i.e. not to fold or tear out 'Books' pages, to crumb onto the 'Book' or that
dignity must not be harm in any way). Then the 'Reader' gets a chance to 'read the Book' in privacy for a set period of time.
It was a great project !
I think many people could see the real face of many cultures and learn more about it. I met many interesting people who became my friends so it was definitelly worth taking part in!!!
